Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo

Sanitary

The Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo (HDES) is a key institution for the residents of the islands of São Miguel and Santa Maria, as well as a fundamental pillar in the provision of health services in the Autonomous Region of the Azores.

In May 2024, the hospital was severely affected by a fire that forced the emergency evacuation of patients to other medical facilities. As a result of the incident, the accident and emergency department, the surgical block and the delivery area were temporarily out of service, forcing patients to seek care in other facilities.

Five months later, a new accident and emergency department was opened at the HDES Modular Hospital, designed to handle less serious cases. This reopening marked the return of the accident and emergency department after a long period of inactivity caused by the fire.

The company Manusa Portugal was in charge of installing the automatic doors in several areas of the new modular hospital. The main entrance is equipped with bi-parting automatic doors with fixed leaves, allowing direct access to the lobby. These see-through leaves provide natural light and a safe and free-flowing transit of people.

In other areas of the hospital, such as triage units and patient isolation rooms, different types of doors were installed, adapted to the specific characteristics and needs of each space. In areas with less space, single-slide opening telescopic doors were chosen, whereas in larger areas, side-opening doors were installed, to make them easier to pass through.
