Innovation in the operating theatres of the Hospital Occidental in Managua

Sanitary

Inaugurated in 2018, the Hospital Occidental de Managua ‘Dr. Fernando Vélez Paiz’ is one of the most important medical centres in Nicaragua, playing a key role in the country's healthcare system. The 22,000 square metre hospital is considered one of the largest and most modern in Nicaragua. Its infrastructure consists of a total of nine buildings: three single-storey buildings and six two-storey buildings, which allows it to accommodate a large capacity for both consultation and inpatient services.

The hospital has more than 300 beds, distributed in various specialised areas, giving it the capacity to provide medical care for a wide range of pathologies. It also has 7 state-of-the-art operating theatres, designed to carry out highly complex surgical procedures with the highest standards of quality and safety. With 22 consulting rooms for outpatient care, this medical centre has the capacity to attend to more than a thousand patients daily, covering both emergencies and scheduled consultations.

One of the highlights of the hospital is its focus on technological innovation and patient safety. In this respect, the hospital's operating theatres are equipped with 7 hermetic doors made of stainless steel, a material known for its durability and resistance to corrosion, which contributes to maintaining high levels of hygiene. These doors are fitted with an electro-polarised glass system, an advanced technology that allows for switching between transparency and opacity according to the needs of medical staff, thus ensuring patient privacy without compromising visibility at crucial moments.

In addition, operating theatre doors have the ability to open automatically via elbow push buttons or proximity sensors, facilitating staff access without the need for manual contact, reducing the risk of contamination. In the event of an emergency or power failure, the doors can be opened manually by means of a safety tubular handle, ensuring quick and safe access at all times.

The Hospital Occidental de Managua ‘Dr. Fernando Vélez Paiz’ has established itself as a benchmark for medical care in Nicaragua, not only for its size and modern infrastructure, but also for its focus on safety, technology and the quality of the health services it offers.
